Asafa Powell gave us a peek of things to come at the 13th World Athletic Championships to be held August 27 – September 4 2011 in Daegu, South Korea. See Official website here.
The Jamaican Sprinter, placed 1st in the Jamaican Nationals World trials held Saturday, June 26, 2011. The race was close but Powell closed in on Yohan Blake, Steve Mullings and Nesta Carter to beat the sprinters to the line. Earlier, with a hush in the stadium, spectators were standing from start to finish. At the end of the race even local commentators were uncertain of the winner. Soon enough, the official results placed Powell in 10.08s just beating out Yohan Blake’s 10.09s. As one commentator put it “by the flare of a nostril” Powell secured the win.
In perhaps one of his best performances, he demonstrated drive and in a rare show did not slow his pace until past the finish line. Exhilarated supporters, stunned doubters and shaken athletes received a glimpse of things to come on the World stage later this year in Daegu.
Ready…Set… Powell!
