Hearing Impaired Driving in Jamaica

on March 25th, 2009 by NaomiOneLove

Can you imagine driving on the Jamaican roads and not being able to hear the sound of the motor vehicle you are in much less the other vehicles driving round about you?

Can you imagine hearing-impaired persons driving?  Well, it is possible. Hearing-impaired persons can drive just like you do. As a matter of fact there is a hearing-impaired motorist driving for twelve years on the Jamaican roads and he has had no major accidents. ……….There you have it!

A few weeks ago beginning of March 2009, HEART the national TVET Centre in Gordon Town; St Andrew started a one month training course in Basic Skills to deal with deaf drivers.  About twenty five persons inclusive of certified officers, clerical officers and policemen were scheduled to do this course.

Hopefully it won’t be too long for many others of the deaf community to be able to drive around to transact business, run errands, just like everyone else. After all, there are countries where the deaf community is not barred from driving. Though this might be thought to be very challenging it is done elsewhere so why not in Jamaica?
