You may have heard about RADA? Do you know what the acronym means? The Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Agriculture & Lands. Do you know the details about RADA? What do they REALLY do? How can they help you?
RADA dispels all the naysayers who constantly jump on the ‘poor socio-economic conditions’ and ‘people without basic skills’ bandwagon. Here are some programmes, efforts and initiatives of RADA.
- The Social Services and Home Economics programme includes, but is not limited to, Home Management, Child Development & Family Life, Clothing & Craft, Income Generation, Building Self Esteem, Conflict Resolution, Small Business Management and Basic Computer Skills.
- The Domestic Food Crop Production and Marketing Project aims to increase the production of selected crops. RADA gives away seeds of selected crops and provide fertilizer, some equipment and advice.
- The National Schools Garden/ Schools in Agriculture Programme is designed to promote agriculture in schools and among youth as a viable career opportunity.
- The Income Generating projects provide training, employment and income earning opportunities for farmers, rural women and youth. This project also allows the consuming public to get closer to the production aspect of RADA’s operations. Production and distribution includes Bammies, Pancake mixes, Gari, Cassava Flour and Pancake Syrups. The AgriMart at 191 Old Hope Road, Kingston 6 is an outlet for the sale of assorted household items, craft, and value-added products (spices, jams and jellies, bammies, tamarind balls, etc.), manufactured by the women in the cottage industry island wide.
I wonder what would happen if the leading organizations and societal groups would get involved. If these groups would promote and support RADA in a significant way, the results could be a profound advancement of the welfare of our citizens and our country.
